You Can Microwave a Steak

Park the truck. Grab your coffee. Let's solve absolutely nothing for the next few minutes.

You Can Microwave a Steak

You can microwave a steak. Nobody's stopping you.

You can even start with a beautiful ribeye. Great marbling. Thick cut. The kind of steak that deserves a hot grill, a cold drink, and at least one loud opinion about the proper level of doneness. Medium-rare, is the only way.

Instead, you throw it in the microwave. A few minutes later you'll still have dinner. You'll still have protein. You'll still be able to tell everyone you had steak.

But nobody's going to ask you how it was. Because somewhere between the refrigerator and the microwave, you managed to take something that started with great potential and turn it into something completely forgettable.

The steak didn't fail you. You failed the steak.

That thought bounces around my head more often than you'd think. It's amazing how often it shows up in places that have nothing to do with dinner.

People ask us why our wooden flags cost more than some of the others they see online. It's a fair question. At first glance they're all made from wood. They've all got stars and stripes. They all hang on a wall.

But then again, every steak starts with a cow. That doesn't make every steak memorable.

The wood has never been the hard part. You can order lumber all day long. You can fill a shop with expensive tools. You can even watch enough YouTube videos to convince yourself you know what you're doing.

None of that builds the flag. What builds the flag is the moment you decide a stripe isn't quite right and start over. It's standing across the shop looking at a piece you could absolutely ship today and deciding you're not going to.It's sanding one more time because, apparently, the wood refuses to give up.

Those are the decisions nobody sees. They're also the only ones that matter. There have been plenty of days when we've finished a flag, leaned it against the wall, stared at it for a while, and then said “Nope. Not because the customer would've noticed. Because we did.

Rustic Star Flag

That's the kind of stuff that never makes it into a product description. It also happens to be the difference between making something out of wood and making something you're proud to sign your name to.

Maybe that's why we don't spend much time chasing faster or cheaper. If that's your thing, there's no shortage of it. We'd rather spend another afternoon getting it right than spend the next ten years wishing we hadn't. Turns out that's true for more than woodworking.

Friendships don't get better because you rush them. Families don't get stronger because you hurry through dinner. Businesses don't become meaningful because they figured out the quickest way to make a buck.

Some things simply deserve your best.

A steak.

A wooden flag.

The people you're building a life with.

A good pour of whiskey at the end of the day.

None of them get better because you rushed them.
